Armenia takes historic step towards EU membership as president signs accession law
Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan has signed a law to officially initiate the country's process of joining the EU, marking a significant step towards closer ties with Europe.
The announcement was made by the presidential press service on April 4, confirming that President Khachaturyan signed the law to begin the EU accession process, Caliber.Az reports.
On March 26, the Armenian parliament approved the bill on Armenia’s EU accession in its second and final reading. The bill was presented as part of an initiative driven by several public and political organisations, which managed to gather 60,000 signatures from citizens in support of the move. Under Armenia’s Constitution, any citizen-driven legislative proposal requires at least 50,000 signatures to be considered by parliament.
