Armenian authorities escalate relations with Russia to point of no return – Opposition MP

24 November 2023 12:25

Secretary of the opposition “I Have the Honor” faction Tigran Abrahamyan has said that the Armenian leadership is constantly aggravating relations with Russia, bringing it to the point of no return.

While commenting on Yerevan’s recent demarches on this or other issues, the Armenian MP considered the existence of disagreements between the two countries as not the key problem. There can always be differences in approaches to certain issues, and this, as for his assessment, is natural. Abrahamyan himself has a number of questions regarding certain decisions of the Russian Federation, however, he believes that one should realize that Moscow remains the key actor in the region, and it is extremely dangerous to "bury" relations with it, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.

“The complexity of the situation is that the Armenian authorities are deteriorating relations in every possible way, leading to conflict and trying to bring them to the point beyond which it will be impossible to return to normal,” Abrahamyan noted.

The fundamental reason for the deterioration of Armenian-Russian relations is the change of power in 2018 and the policy adopted by Pashinyan, which led to dire consequences.

Abrahamyan is confident that the potential for restoring relations has not been exhausted, but this cannot happen under the current Armenian government, “which has neither the desire nor the will for this. Moreover, ideologically, the Armenian authorities are in a completely different direction.”

The recent months have seen a clear tendency towards increasing tension in Armenian-Russian relations. Yerevan has practically refused to participate in a number of integration projects in the post-Soviet space: the CIS and the CSTO. The Armenian leadership has repeatedly boycotted summits and events under the auspices of these structures. All this is accompanied by mutual accusations between the two countries’ officials.
