Armenian PM says constitutional referendum to follow 2026 elections
Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has confirmed that the constitutional referendum will take place after the parliamentary elections in 2026.
Pashinyan made the announcement during a meeting with government officials at the K. Demirchyan Sports and Concert Complex on NOvember 22, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
He emphasised that, ahead of the elections, political parties should present their positions on the issue to the public. The views of the party that secures the majority will play a decisive role in shaping the draft of the new Constitution.
For the record, Armenia's upcoming parliamentary elections, scheduled for June 7, 2026, mark the first regularly scheduled national vote since 2017 and the first full-term contest under Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's leadership since the 2021 snap elections. This vote will determine the composition of the unicameral National Assembly (parliament), which in turn nominates the prime minister—the country's most powerful position in its parliamentary republic system established by the 2015 constitutional reforms.
