Internet access begins to return in Iran after 48-day shutdown

16 April 2026 15:50

Limited internet access is gradually being restored in Iran after a near-total shutdown that lasted more than 48 days, with users reportedly regaining access to services such as Google search.

The disruption, which has significantly restricted connectivity across the country, has been described by monitoring group NetBlocks as one of the most extensive internet censorship measures imposed in a connected society, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

According to NetBlocks, the blackout continued for 1,128 hours, with an estimated economic impact of around $1.8 billion based on its COST methodology. The group also highlighted broader concerns about human rights implications linked to the prolonged outage.
