Armenian police vow to stop any unlawful acts amid planned Church rally
The Armenian Interior Ministry has issued a warning to citizens to avoid provocations ahead of a planned rally in Echmiadzin, organised by a group of bishops rebelling against Catholicos Garegin II.
The announcement comes amid reports of heightened tensions surrounding the event scheduled for the evening of December 18, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.
On December 17, ten bishops of the Armenian Apostolic Church addressed the public, calling for a gathering at the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin at 5:00 p.m. on December 18. Following this, the Aragatsotn Diocese announced that its joint service, originally planned for 7:00 p.m. at St. Hovhannes Church in Byurakan, would be moved to 5:00 p.m. at the Mother See of Holy Echmiadzin, aligning with the bishops’ call.
In response to these announcements, authorities noted that some individuals and social media users began posting provocative content intended to inflame tensions.
The Ministry urged citizens to refrain from unlawful or provocative actions, respect the rights of others, and comply with law enforcement officers maintaining public order. “The Ministry will perform its legally mandated functions — ensuring public safety and security for all citizens. Any illegal actions will face appropriate criminal prosecution,” the statement said.
Local media reports indicate that supporters of former President Robert Kocharyan and detained Russian businessman Samvel Karapetyan are expected in Echmiadzin today. According to Armenian Deputy Speaker Ruben Rubinyan, these groups may attempt to obstruct the service organised by the rebellious bishops.
