Azerbaijan moves to join UNESCO Global Geoparks network

03 July 2024 19:27

A significant step forward in Azerbaijan's environmental conservation efforts was highlighted by Firuddin Aliyev, Head of the Biodiversity Protection Service at the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.

He told the press briefing that Azerbaijan plans to create its first biosphere reserve at Zaqatala State Nature Reserve and is actively working to establish a new national park covering Samukh and Gakh districts, the Alazan River valley (Ganikh), and the Ahar-Bakhar mountain range, Caliber.Az reports citing local media.

This initiative aims to integrate these areas into the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks, marking Azerbaijan's debut in this prestigious international conservation framework.

Currently, Azerbaijan manages a network of 10 national parks, 10 state nature reserves, and 24 wildlife sanctuaries, collectively covering approximately 893,000 hectares. These protected areas play a crucial role in preserving Azerbaijan's rich biodiversity and natural heritage.

Aliyev emphasized that these initiatives reflect Azerbaijan's proactive approach towards environmental stewardship and its dedication to integrating with global conservation frameworks such as UNESCO's Geoparks Network. These efforts not only aim to protect Azerbaijan's diverse ecosystems but also to promote sustainable development and raise awareness about the importance of preserving natural habitats for future generations.
