Following its independence, Azerbaijan prioritised the establishment of robust relations with the Czech Republic across all sectors, recognising it as a key component of its foreign policy. Given the unique role of the Czech Republic within the European political landscape, particular emphasis was placed on elevating their relationship to the level of a strategic partnership.
The Czech Republic formally acknowledged Azerbaijan's state independence on January 8, 1992, and diplomatic relations were established shortly thereafter, on January 29, 1993. The Azerbaijani Embassy in the Czech Republic was inaugurated on August 15, 2007, followed by the opening of the Czech Embassy in Azerbaijan on December 1, 2009.
On April 8, 2011, a working group for Azerbaijani-Czech Inter-Parliamentary Relations was formed within the Milli Majlis (Parliament) of Azerbaijan. Subsequently, on July 19, 2011, the Czech-Azerbaijani Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group was established in the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the Czech Parliament.
Additionally, the Czech-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group was formed in the Senate, the upper chamber of the Czech Parliament, on May 24, 2012. This group is integrated into the Czech-Azerbaijan Inter-Parliamentary Friendship Group in the Chamber of Deputies.
The reciprocal visits by the heads of state have significantly enhanced cooperation between the two nations over the years. These visits pave the way for the development of inter-state relations and often result in the signing of joint agreements that span various fields, thereby fostering future cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Czech Republic.
