Azerbaijan’s seismological service shifts to enhanced operational mode Following earthquake in Türkiye
The Republican Seismological Service Centre under the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) has moved to an enhanced operational mode in response to the recent natural disaster in Türkiye.
The monitoring of the earthquake zone is currently underway to assess the situation, the Centre told Caliber.Az.
Istanbul, a major metropolitan area in Türkiye, has experienced a series of seismic tremors in recent hours, with multiple earthquakes striking off the coast of Büyükçekmece in the Sea of Marmara. These tremors, including a significant earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2, have raised concerns about the region’s seismic vulnerability. Istanbul lies near the North Anatolian Fault, a major geological feature that has been responsible for significant earthquakes in the past.
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) has been closely monitoring the situation, reporting a total of twenty-eight recorded seismic events so far. The epicenters of the recent earthquakes were located in the Sea of Marmara, a highly active region. Authorities have indicated that, despite the intensity of the tremors, no significant damage has been reported, with transportation networks and infrastructure remaining unaffected at this stage.
In response to the ongoing seismic activity, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has expressed his concern and assured the public that the government is closely monitoring developments. Despite the panic caused by the strong tremors, Turkish officials remain confident in the country’s preparedness and resilience in the face of such natural disasters.
