Azerbaijani boxer secures Olympic ticket for Paris 2024

12 March 2024 09:15

Azerbaijani boxer Nijat Huseynov has clinched a coveted spot for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.

The Azerbaijan Boxing Federation proudly announced this achievement, highlighting Huseynov's exceptional performance in the first Olympic qualifying tournament held in Busto Arsizio, Italy, Caliber.Az reports citing Report.

Huseynov, a two-time European champion competing in the weight category up to 51 kg, showcased his prowess by defeating Roscoe Hill from the United States in the quarter-finals. This victory secured his pathway to the Olympics, marking a significant milestone in his career.

Prior to his triumph against Hill, Huseynov navigated through a series of formidable opponents, including World Championship bronze medalist Deepak Deepak from India, World Championship finalist and European champion Sahil Alahverdovi from Georgia, and continental vice-champion Rudolf Garboyan. His consistent success on the ring culminated in a hard-fought victory against the American contender, a silver medalist of the World Championship, with a score of 3:2.

With Huseynov's qualification, the tally of Olympic licenses secured by the Azerbaijani boxing team for Paris 2024 has risen to three. Alongside Huseynov, Murad Allahverdiyev (80 kg) and Magomed Abdullayev (+92 kg) are set to represent Azerbaijan at the pinnacle of sporting excellence, having previously participated in the Olympics at the III European Games.

In parallel, Sarkhan Aliyev is poised to compete in the quarter-finals in Italy, further underscoring Azerbaijan's formidable presence in the international boxing arena.
