Spanish party proposes ending joint 2030 World Cup bid with Morocco
05 August 2026 20:28
Spain's Sumar parliamentary group has submitted a proposal to Congress calling for a review of the format of the 2030 FIFA World Cup, EFE reports.
The report said the initiative was signed by four lawmakers, three of whom belong to the United Left party.
The proposal calls for abandoning the plan to co-host the tournament with Morocco and urges FIFA, the Royal Spanish Football Federation, and the Portuguese authorities to reconsider the current hosting model. The text argues that "football cannot be used to whitewash everything."
Under the current plan, the 2030 FIFA World Cup is set to be hosted by Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with the opening matches taking place in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay.
