President Aliyev: Green energy in liberated lands is Azerbaijan’s strategic priority To Baku Energy Week participants / UPDATED

02 June 2025 15:02

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev delivered a keynote address at the opening of the 30th Baku Energy Week, held at the Baku Expo Centre, reaffirming that the development of green energy in Azerbaijan’s liberated territories is a key pillar of the country’s long-term energy strategy, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

In his remarks, President Aliyev extended a warm welcome to participants and emphasised the significance of the event as a major platform for showcasing Azerbaijan’s energy achievements and discussing future priorities.

“This significant event serves as an important platform for the presentation of our achievements in the energy sector and the discussion of future priorities,” he said. “This is already the 30th event, an anniversary one, which once again confirms its successful history and importance.”

The president highlighted the evolution of the event from the original “Caspian Oil & Gas” exhibition — initiated with the support of National Leader Heydar Aliyev — into today’s Baku Energy Week. He described it as Azerbaijan’s first national exhibition brand and a vital platform for energy diplomacy, strategic partnerships, and international engagement.

Aliyev underlined that the forum now covers a broad spectrum of topics, from traditional energy sources to renewables, and has gained recognition as an influential forum for shaping new global energy strategies. This year’s edition brings together representatives and companies from over 80 countries.

“The Baku Energy Week is already recognized as an influential forum for shaping new approaches and international energy dialogue,” he said. “The progress achieved in this area further strengthens Azerbaijan's position as a reliable and responsible partner in the global energy market.”

He reiterated that energy security, diversification of energy supply, and green transition remain key pillars of Azerbaijan’s energy agenda. Special focus was given to the post-conflict reconstruction efforts, particularly the development of the liberated territories into a “green energy” zone.

“Our successful strategic approaches have created ample opportunities for the sustainable development of Azerbaijan in the energy sector,” he added, noting that current initiatives reflect both a commitment to environmental protection and a strategic ambition to lead in the evolving global energy landscape.

President Aliyev expressed confidence that Baku Energy Week would continue to deepen international dialogue, foster new partnerships, and promote mutually beneficial cooperation.

“I would like to once again congratulate the organizers and all participants… and wish each of you fruitful discussions, successful projects, and continued cooperation,” he concluded.

Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev has stated that Azerbaijan is firmly committed to investing in renewable energy in cooperation with international partners.

He made the remarks addressing the official opening ceremony of the 30th Caspian Oil and Gas Exhibition, the 13th Caspian Power Exhibition, and the 30th Baku Energy Forum, which is underway as part of the Baku Energy Week at the Baku Expo Center on June 2, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.

“The green agenda of Azerbaijan is very ambitious. The country, which is rich in oil and gas, is investing - together with foreign investors - in green energy, which demonstrates our responsibility,” said President Aliyev.

“With all that green energy potential, we will definitely meet the growing demand for electricity in Azerbaijan, mainly through renewable sources,” the head of state added.

Speaking about the historical roots of Azerbaijan’s energy diplomacy, President Aliyev recalled the early years of the country’s oil and gas development: “As it was already mentioned, back in 1994, when the first oil and gas exhibition was held, right after that, Azerbaijan signed a contract with a consortium of international oil companies, which later was called the Contract of the Century. It actually changed the whole geopolitical and geo-economic situation in the region.”

“That was due to the vision of President Heydar Aliyev,” the head of state added.

Highlighting the country’s progress since then, President Aliyev said: “Today, Azerbaijan is a country with a stable political system, with a developing economy.”

“Azerbaijan is implementing large-scale economic reforms, and our economy is self-sufficient. Our foreign debt is less than 7% of GDP,” added the head of state.
