Beijing to host meeting on Iran's nuclear program with Russia, Iran

12 March 2025 12:58

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning has said that Chinese authorities will host a trilateral meeting with the participation of China, Russia and Iran on the Iranian nuclear issue on March 14.

“On March 14, Beijing will host a meeting involving the PRC, Russia and Iran on the Iranian nuclear issue, which will be chaired by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu,” she told a briefing, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

China, Russia, and Iran have consistently advocated for the preservation and restoration of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal. This agreement, established in 2015, aimed to limit Iran's nuclear program in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.

In June 2024, during a meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Board of Governors, China, Russia, and Iran issued a joint statement emphasizing the importance of reinstating the JCPOA. They called on Western nations to demonstrate political will and cease escalating tensions, asserting that restoring the deal would resolve many issues related to Iran's nuclear program and provide comprehensive monitoring by IAEA inspectors.

Furthering their commitment, in January 2025, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi reported that Iran was actively updating Russia and China on its discussions with European countries regarding the nuclear program. This effort underscores the collaborative approach among the three nations to address nuclear proliferation concerns and maintain regional stability.

Additionally, in March 2025, China, Russia, and Iran conducted joint naval exercises in the Gulf of Oman near the Strait of Hormuz. These drills, named Maritime Security Belt 2025, included live-fire exercises and highlighted the strategic support among the nations, especially in the context of rising tensions with the United States over Iran's nuclear ambitions.
