Belgium seeks US approval for $3.69 billion missile deal
Belgium is seeking approval from the United States for a major missile procurement package valued at up to $3.69 billion, as part of efforts to strengthen its military capabilities, Belgian media reported on Saturday, May 9.
According to the newspapers De Tijd and L’Echo, the planned purchase focuses on AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles manufactured by RTX Corporation. The missiles are intended to equip Belgium’s fleet of 45 Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II fighter jets and could also be integrated into the country’s NASAMS air defence system.
Documents from the US Defence Security Cooperation Agency confirm that Belgium has formally requested authorisation from Washington to proceed with the acquisition.
The AMRAAM system uses radar guidance to engage aerial threats and has gained increased attention due to its operational use in the war in Ukraine.
In parallel with the purchase, Belgium is reportedly seeking to secure a role in the missile production process. Officials are discussing the possibility of using the FN Browning facility in Zutendaal to manufacture missiles for European customers, according to Belga news agency.
The Netherlands is also competing to host parts of the production chain and has already secured significant AMRAAM procurement deals in recent years.
