US president to push new Russia sanctions before Trump’s inauguration

09 January 2025 16:46

President Joe Biden is poised to introduce new sanctions targeting Russia’s economy this week as part of efforts to strengthen Kyiv's war effort against Moscow before Donald Trump takes office, a US official said.

In addition to the sanctions, the Biden administration is preparing to provide Ukraine with $500 million in military aid, which will include air defence missiles, air-to-ground munitions, and support equipment for F-16 fighter jets, the official, who wished to remain anonymous, confirmed, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

With President-elect Donald Trump set to return to the White House on January 20, there are mixed expectations in Kyiv. While Trump's advisers have proposed potential diplomatic solutions to end the war in Ukraine, some of these ideas may involve significant territorial concessions to Russia. These developments have raised concerns that a rapid peace deal might come at a high cost for Ukraine.

Biden’s team is determined to ensure that Ukraine is in the strongest possible position on the battlefield to maximize its leverage in any future negotiations with Russia. Though details of the new sanctions have yet to be disclosed, Biden's aides are briefing Trump's team on the upcoming measures.

The US official also stated that the majority of weapons and munitions promised to Ukraine have already been delivered, with the remaining shipments on their way. Ukraine's critical munitions stockpiles are now in a much stronger position, the official added.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s government has often urged for more extensive weaponry than Biden initially pledged, leading to some private tensions over topics like Abrams tanks, F-16 jets, and longer-range ATACMS missile systems. However, in hindsight, these steps have not significantly shifted the momentum on the battlefield, according to the official.

In light of ongoing discussions about peace negotiations, Ukraine may eventually require security guarantees, possibly including NATO membership, to defend against potential future Russian aggression. Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.

Meanwhile, US military officials are monitoring North Korean activities in the Ukraine conflict, as it is believed that thousands of North Korean forces are aiding Russia in its efforts. The US is also expected to impose additional sanctions on Chinese entities that have supported Russia in the war.

Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized last month that the US is committed to further diminishing Russia’s oil revenues and limiting its access to foreign supplies to undermine its war effort in Ukraine.
