Guadeloupe voices strong criticism of French authorities after fatal case Baku Initiative Group highlights police accountability concerns
The Union Against Gendarmerie Violence in Guadeloupe has strongly condemned the killing of a man following an incident involving French law enforcement agencies, according to the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), as cited by local media.
During the event that took place on April 12, a non-lethal electroshock device was first deployed against the individual, after which a firearm was later discharged by one of the French gendarmerie officers. The man subsequently died from the injuries he sustained. The officer who fired the weapon was taken into custody and placed under investigation.
The statement said that criticism of the incident was included in a declaration issued by the organisation. It stressed that a man named Liber Argelier lost his life as a result of unjustified gunfire opened by the military police, describing the case as "another example of state violence."
The organisation also connected the incident to previous similar fatal cases, arguing that the pattern is systematic in nature and claiming that law enforcement bodies have exceeded and abused their authority. It further called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident, including clarification of why the shot was fired and whether it was legally justified.
In conclusion, the statement included an appeal for public mobilisation aimed at ensuring justice, holding those responsible to account, and preventing similar incidents in the future.
