The automotive industry is undergoing a historic transformation in its decarbonization strategy, and it’s not solely focused on electric vehicles (EVs) or hydrogen, which had previously been seen as leading solutions, Caliber.Az reports citing the foreign media.

Instead, a new technology is emerging that experts are calling the "new diesel" due to its exceptional efficiency and versatility. Remarkably, this breakthrough fuel exists in both liquid and gaseous forms and has already been utilized in ships, cars, and heavy-duty vehicles. Its innovative properties suggest it could play a crucial role in the future of clean transportation.

Over the years, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) has emerged as a more viable fuel alternative compared to diesel, thanks to its environmental and economic benefits. LPG is increasingly favored due to its cleaner combustion properties and compatibility with existing engine systems. As diesel's popularity wanes due to pollution concerns and stringent regulations, LPG is poised to become the market's new environmentally friendly fuel.

LPG, or Liquefied Petroleum Gas, is a flammable substance that exists in gaseous form but is liquefied under pressure for storage and transport. It primarily consists of propane and/or butane, either alone or in mixtures with other gases. Unlike diesel, LPG combustion results in significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions, making it a cleaner option for the environment.

Extensive research by experts such as Habu and Henein has highlighted the advantages of LPG in engine applications, particularly in dual-fuel systems. Their studies confirm that LPG's environmental benefits and adaptability to existing technologies position it as a promising fuel for a sustainable future.

Research indicates that integrating Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) with diesel engines can lead to notable improvements in thermal efficiency and emissions. Studies reveal that while LPG alone enhances thermal efficiency by up to 1.29%, it significantly reduces fuel consumption by approximately 9.68% compared to diesel-only engines. Moreover, LPG use results in lower emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and carbon dioxide (CO2), with the most substantial reductions occurring when LPG comprises 50% of the fuel blend.

The adaptation of LPG in engines involves modifications such as installing an engine management module to regulate LPG injection timing and quantity, akin to an Engine Control Unit (ECU). These adjustments improve the fuel-air mixture, leading to better combustion efficiency and higher power output.

Despite these advancements, there is often confusion between LPG and diesel due to their different properties and applications. Dual-fuel engines, which can switch between LPG and diesel, offer optimized fuel control and are increasingly attractive to automotive manufacturers aiming to meet stringent environmental regulations.

The global market for LPG vehicles is on the rise, with a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6% from 2022 to 2029. This growth is driven by factors such as urbanization, technological advancements, and a rising demand for renewable energy solutions.

Car manufacturers are increasingly embracing Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) technology to align with growing trends and government initiatives focused on clean energy. Several automotive brands are pioneering innovative LPG engine designs and fuel systems, aiming to enhance the efficiency and environmental benefits of LPG as a fuel source.

The integration of LPG in the mobility industry represents a significant shift within the broader alternative fuels revolution. As the industry diversifies its approach to reducing emissions, LPG emerges as a viable option alongside hydrogen and other green technologies. However, a key question remains: which major automakers will commit to developing and scaling LPG solutions? While some brands are actively exploring LPG technology, it remains to be seen whether leading players like Tesla or Volkswagen will adopt it on a substantial scale.
