FM Lavrov reaffirms Russia’s role in Armenia-Azerbaijan peace after Trump talks Top diplomats’ call highlights competing peace agendas in South Caucasus
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov, initiated by the Armenian side, to discuss recent high-level diplomatic developments, the Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed in a statement.
During the call, Minister Mirzoyan provided Lavrov with a detailed account of the recent trilateral meeting between Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, US President Donald Trump, and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, Caliber.Az reports.
In response, Foreign Minister Lavrov underscored the importance of achieving a sustainable and lasting peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan. He reiterated that this objective should be under the trilateral agreements brokered with Russian involvement between 2020 and 2022, which continue to form the basis of Moscow’s diplomatic framework for the region.
“The head of the Armenian Foreign Ministry provided details of the contacts between Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia N.V. Pashinyan and US President D. Trump and Azerbaijani President I.H. Aliyev. S.V. Lavrov emphasised the importance of achieving sustainable peace between Baku and Yerevan in line with the trilateral agreements at the highest level for 2020–2022, reached with Russia playing a central role. Moscow’s readiness to continue to promote the comprehensive normalisation of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia was noted,” the Russian Foreign Ministry stated.
In addition to regional peace efforts, the ministers also touched on a number of pressing bilateral matters on the Russian-Armenian agenda, the ministry noted.
