China points to Europe’s security failures as root cause of Ukraine crisis
The ongoing war in Ukraine stems from long-standing security contradictions in Europe, which, according to China, must be addressed by European nations themselves, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun stated during a briefing.
Responding to recent claims by Western politicians that China could exert pressure on Russia to end the conflict, Guo stressed that China is neither responsible for initiating the "Ukrainian crisis" nor a participant in it. He further noted that the narrative portraying China as the solution to the conflict is misleading.
"It is not China that wants to end the conflict, is fuelling it, or profiting from it, but other parties," the spokesman said. "Shifting the responsibility to China will not solve the issue."
Guo emphasised that the roots of the crisis lie in longstanding regional security disputes in Europe. He called for a resolution that respects the legitimate security interests of all parties and advocated for dialogue and negotiations to establish a balanced, effective, and sustainable European security framework.
The comments came amid recent high-level meetings and statements regarding the Ukraine conflict. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, in a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Keqiang in New York, expressed the EU’s readiness to cut off Russia’s financial resources used to fund the war.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump, speaking at the UN, accused China and India of being the main sponsors of Russia’s military actions in Ukraine and criticised certain NATO members for continuing to purchase Russian energy resources.
