At least 22 people have been killed after a construction crane collapsed onto a passenger train in Thailand, causing it to derail and catch fire, railway officials say.

The incident happened at about 09:05 local time when a crane being used to build a high-speed rail bridge fell onto Special Express Train No. 21, which was travelling from Krung Thep Aphiwat station in Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

Officials said the crash occurred between Nong Nam Khun and Sikhio stations in Nakhon Ratchasima province, in the country’s north-east.

Thailand’s state railway company said the train was carrying 195 people based on the seating plan, although the actual number may differ.

Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, has ordered a “thorough and comprehensive investigation” into the causes of the accident.
