Dagestan floods leave massive destruction, regional leader confirms
Floods in Dagestan have caused extensive damage, but the unity and support of the entire country will help the region recover, Head of the Republic Sergey Melikov said on his Telegram channel.
Following instructions from Russian President Vladimir Putin, a government commission has begun work to address the consequences of the floods. Russian Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov and Construction, Housing and Utilities Minister Irek Fayzullin, along with other commission members, have arrived in the region.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations delivered over 23 tons of humanitarian aid to Dagestan, including water pumps, heat guns, and bottled water. More than 1,000 volunteers are already working in the area, providing over 100 tons of water, food, and essential supplies in the first days.
Heavy rains began on March 28, damaging infrastructure, followed by a second wave on April 5. Several thousand people were evacuated in the Derbent district after a dam breach. Six people have died, and over 15,000 have been affected. On April 7, a regional state of emergency was declared.
