Deputy FM: Azerbaijan reaffirms strong support for Non-Aligned Movement

14 May 2025 13:21

Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Yalchin Rafiyev has underscored Azerbaijan’s steadfast support for the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), an organisation that advocates for the independence of nations in their foreign relations.

Rafiyev made these remarks at a recent discussion on "The Rise of the Global South and the West: Azerbaijan's Role, New Opportunities for Cooperation and Development", Caliber.Az reports via local media.

The event, which was hosted by the Committee of International and Inter-Parliamentary Relations of the Azerbaijani parliament, focused on Azerbaijan’s growing role in global cooperation.

During his address, Rafiyev noted the dynamic transformation of the Global South, a group of countries that now account for 85 per cent of the world’s population and 39 per cent of global GDP.

He highlighted that these nations are experiencing significant political and economic changes. Rafiyev added that Azerbaijan consistently emphasised the importance of multilateralism in its foreign policy.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is an international organisation of countries that consider themselves not formally aligned with or against any major power bloc.

The core principle of NAM is to advocate for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of nations, particularly those from the developing world. It emphasizes peaceful coexistence, non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, and the promotion of global justice. Over the decades, the movement has played an important role in addressing issues such as colonialism, apartheid, and economic inequality.
