Top official on Baku-Kabul ties: Azerbaijan sees strong potential for cooperation

22 May 2026 15:07

Azerbaijan and Afghanistan share longstanding historical, cultural and traditional ties and are seeking to expand cooperation across multiple sectors, according to Hikmet Hajiyev, Assistant to the President of Azerbaijan and Head of the Foreign Policy Affairs Department of the Presidential Administration.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Urban Forum in Baku on May 22, Hajiyev said Azerbaijan’s diplomatic mission in Kabul remains “fully operational” at ambassadorial level, Caliber.Az reports via Ariana News.

“There is historical, cultural and traditional relationship between our countries and between our peoples,” he said.

Hajiyev also referred to a visit by Azerbaijan’s deputy prime minister to Kabul last year, saying discussions focused on exploring opportunities for economic and trade cooperation between the two countries.

“We see a lot of prospects for cooperation between our countries and most importantly people-to-people contacts as well,” he added.

He further noted that a number of Afghan students are currently studying in Azerbaijan, describing education as a sector with “great potential” for future bilateral cooperation.
