The attack marked one of the deadliest incidents in Pakistan’s southwestern province of Balochistan in recent months. According to Pakistani officials, at least 24 people were killed and dozens injured after an explosives-laden vehicle struck a train carrying security personnel and civilians near Quetta’s Chaman Phatak area, causing several carriages to derail and catch fire.
The separatist militant group Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) claimed responsibility for the bombing. The group has repeatedly targeted Pakistani security forces and infrastructure in Balochistan, a mineral-rich province bordering Afghanistan and Iran that has faced a long-running insurgency.
Authorities declared an emergency in hospitals across Quetta as rescue teams transported victims from the scene. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other senior officials strongly condemned the attack, describing it as an act of terrorism against innocent civilians.
The bombing also followed a series of escalating militant attacks in Balochistan, including the 2025 hijacking of the Jaffar Express train by separatist fighters, highlighting the deteriorating security situation in the region despite ongoing military operations by Pakistani forces.
