Education Ministry under scrutiny after arrests at Armenian pedagogical university
Armenian authorities have detained several high-ranking officials at Khachatur Abovyan Armenian State Pedagogical University (KAPU), raising concerns about corruption linked to the Ministry of Education.
According to Caliber.Az, citing the Armenian newspaper Zhokhovurd, those appointed under the patronage of Education Minister Zhanna Andreasyan may face arrest in the near future.
On October 17, 2025, law enforcement authorities took the rector, vice-rector, and multiple staff members of KAPU into custody.
Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan and Vice-Rector, along with several other university employees, were detained in connection with allegations of bribery, both giving and receiving, as confirmed by the Anti-Corruption Committee of Armenia.
The committee stated that the detained university leaders are accused of establishing and leading a criminal organisation within the university, engaging in large-scale embezzlement and fraud, and accepting bribes. Additional staff members have also been detained as part of the ongoing criminal investigation.
Despite Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan reportedly expressing satisfaction with Andreasyan’s work, he has ordered a full inspection of the university and is awaiting a detailed report on the situation at KAPU.
