Egypt presses UN to approve Gaza peace mission
Egypt is calling for the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution “as soon as possible” to establish a peacekeeping mission in the Gaza Strip.
In an interview with The National, Egyptian Foreign Minister (FM) Badr Abdel Aty outlined the principles of the proposed International Stabilisation Force (ISF) and the core mandate of the proposed Board of Peace, which would oversee the allocation and monitoring of aid funds, Caliber.Az reports.
He explained that the forces — along with the Board of Peace, to be chaired by Donald Trump alongside other figures such as former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair — should focus on supporting Palestinians “so they can govern their own affairs.”
The mission would also help deliver essential services to Gaza’s residents and assist police forces through training and capacity building, Abdel Aty said.
He stressed that the participation of foreign actors in Gaza would be unacceptable, adding, “We need first to have a Security Council resolution as soon as possible to endorse this plan and also to give legitimacy for this ISF, the International Stabilisation Force, and to identify its own mandate and its own mission.”
FM emphasised that “this is very, very important,” adding that Egypt is “ready to participate in all formats, but within specific parameters” that will be detailed in the resolution through a “clear mandate.”
Fm underscored that the matter was “very, very important” and noted that Egypt is “standing ready to participate in all formats but within specific parameters” that will be detailed in the resolution through a “clear mandate.”
Earlier, The National cited sources saying Cairo is expected to lead the stabilisation forces — a multinational contingent of about 4,000 troops from Egypt, Azerbaijan, Türkiye, and Indonesia.
According to the report, the forces will not be heavily armed, relying instead on light firearms and armoured vehicles. They will first deploy in areas vacated by Israeli troops as part of the initial phase of U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
“The mission should be peacekeeping, not peace-enforcing,” Abdel Aty emphasised.
