Endangered humpback whale rescued after entanglement in Barents Sea
An endangered humpback whale was successfully rescued in the Barents Sea after becoming entangled in a rope near Kildin Island, according to marine mammal specialists involved in the operation.
The rescue was confirmed by marine mammal expert Anastasia Kunitsa, who said the rope had become wrapped around the whale’s pectoral fins, severely restricting its movement. Although the animal was still able to swim using its tail and body, its mobility was significantly reduced, allowing rescuers to approach it more safely, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
The whale, a protected species listed in Russia’s Red Book of endangered animals, was first spotted on June 5 showing signs of injury and distress.
The rescue operation was conducted with authorisation from Russia’s environmental watchdog, Rosprirodnadzor. It was coordinated by Murmansk Arctic University, with additional specialists brought in from Sakhalin. Border guards also secured the area to facilitate the mission.
Following an initial intervention, rescuers succeeded in removing the rope and freeing the whale. Officials reported that the operation was completed successfully.
