Energy minister: Türkiye sees no energy supply problems despite Iran war

07 April 2026 14:47

Türkiye is not currently facing disruptions to its energy supply despite the ongoing conflict involving Iran, but officials caution that the situation remains unpredictable.

Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar said the country’s energy security is intact for now, even as tensions in the region continue to raise concerns about potential spillover effects on global markets, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“We hope the war will not last any longer. But the process is currently under our control,” Bayraktar told reporters following a cabinet meeting late on April 6. “There is no problem or difficulty in energy supply security.”

Türkiye, which relies heavily on energy imports, is considered one of the emerging economies most vulnerable to fluctuations in global oil prices. The country shares a border with Iran, a key regional energy producer, heightening its exposure during periods of instability.

Officials have sought to reassure markets by pointing to diversification efforts in recent years. Bayraktar noted previously that dependence on Middle Eastern oil accounts for roughly 10% of Türkiye’s total energy supplies, describing it as “manageable.” He also warned that each $1 increase in oil prices adds approximately $400 million to the country’s energy bill.

So far, there have been no disruptions in natural gas flows from Iran, which ranked as Türkiye’s fourth-largest supplier last year.

Separately, Bayraktar confirmed discussions with Hungary’s foreign minister over the security of the TurkStream pipeline, a critical route delivering Russian natural gas to southern Europe via the Black Sea.

Concerns over infrastructure security intensified after explosives were reportedly discovered near the pipeline in Serbia over the weekend, prompting Viktor Orbán to convene an emergency defence council.

“The security of the pipeline in the Black Sea and on our side is important,” Bayraktar said.
