Estonian FM says it would take war to Russian territory if invaded
Estonia would carry the fight onto Russian territory if Moscow were to invade, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna has said, rejecting claims that the Baltic state is among the most vulnerable countries in Europe.
Speaking in an interview with DW, Tsahkna dismissed as false the narrative that Estonia would be one of Russia’s first targets in the event of a broader conflict. He argued that NATO is currently stronger than ever and noted that the alliance has adopted new defence plans that go beyond a passive posture.
The foreign minister also criticised the idea of entering negotiations with Russia without a clear strategy. He said that Europe had followed such an approach for decades and that it had failed to produce meaningful results.
Tsahkna further argued that appointing a special European Union envoy to engage the Kremlin at this stage would be a mistake. In his view, such an envoy would return in a weakened and humiliated position, potentially undermining both the European Union’s standing and Ukraine’s position in the conflict.
