Estonian PM: EU cannot act as mediator in Russia-Ukraine talks
Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal has said that the European Union should not serve as a mediator in potential negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, arguing that peace talks must take place directly between the two sides.
In remarks posted on Facebook, Michal said that any negotiations should be conducted “only between Ukraine and Russia” and must proceed on terms set by Kyiv, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
He added that the European Union could not act as a mediator because doing so might constrain its ability to continue providing support to Ukraine amid the ongoing war.
According to Michal, Europe’s objective should be to ensure that Moscow agrees to Ukraine’s conditions for peace. He also emphasised the need for what he called “strategic patience,” warning that rushed diplomatic efforts could lead to unfavourable outcomes.
