Estonian president: Europe seeks to bridge rift between Trump, Zelenskyy Strengthen US-EU Relations

03 March 2025 19:44

Europe is exploring ways to repair the strained relationship between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and strengthen US-EU ties, according to Estonian President Alar Karis.

Karis expressed concern over the current state of affairs in a statement to US media, Caliber.Az reports.

He said, "We are now thinking about what we can do. How can we help Zelenskyy and Trump repair their relationship, and what can Europe do to become a more reliable partner for the United States?"

Karis also questioned the reasoning behind severing relations after many years of cooperation between Europe and the US, stating that it would be detrimental to both sides.

To recap, US military aid to Ukraine is now uncertain after a heated meeting between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House on February 28. Trump sharply criticised Zelenskyy, warning him that he was "gambling with world war three" and insisted he should return "when he is ready for peace." The meeting, initially set to continue privately, was abruptly cut short, and a planned press conference to announce a minerals deal was cancelled.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, reacting to the confrontation, stated: "Zelenskyy should apologise for turning this thing into the fiasco for him that it became."

Zelenskyy expressed regret over the encounter, though he remained firm on his stance, stating: “I think that we have to be very open and very honest. And I’m not sure that we did something bad.”

In the aftermath, European leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas declared, “Today, it became clear that the free world needs a new leader,” while German Chancellor Olaf Scholz assured that “Ukraine can rely on Germany – and on Europe.”
