EU lawmakers push to speed up military mobility plans across Europe
Members of the European Parliament are urging faster implementation of measures to enhance military mobility within the European Union, Euractiv reports.
According to the publication, MEPs Robert Zile and Michał Szczerba propose completing the creation of a digital platform for managing transit permits by 2028 instead of 2030, as currently planned under the EU Council’s draft. They also insist on appointing national military mobility coordinators within three months rather than six.
The introduction of a special emergency mechanism is also being discussed, which would allow for the rapid removal of cross-border restrictions and ensure priority transit for military cargo and equipment. At the same time, some EU countries want to retain the right to restrict the transit of foreign military forces even under such a regime.
Previously, the European Commission began work on creating a so-called “military Schengen” system, which is expected to reduce troop deployment times across Europe to three days. As part of the programme, the EU plans to invest around €100 billion in modernising transport infrastructure by 2030.
