EU official highlights strengthened geopolitical role, sanctions against Russia
Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, outlined the European Union's strategic evolution into a significant geopolitical actor during his tenure. In an interview with the Spanish newspaper 20 minutos, Borrell emphasized the EU's commitment to addressing global challenges, particularly through the implementation of sanctions against Russia.
Citing the approval of 14 packages of sanctions aimed at "punishing Russia's war machine," Borrell hailed these measures as a key achievement in the EU's foreign policy arsenal, Caliber.Az reports.
He also noted that the EU has provided military assistance to countries engaged in armed conflicts, reinforcing its position on the global stage.
Additionally, Borrell announced the establishment of the capability for rapid deployment of 5,000 military personnel under European command. This development aims to enhance the EU's ability to intervene in various crisis situations, marking a significant step toward a more robust and coordinated European defence strategy.
