EU Parliament weighs extending Amazon lobbying ban
The European Parliament (EP) is considering revoking lobbying access for a group linked to Amazon, including the tech association DigitalEurope, an internal note seen by Politico shows.
The document includes a recommendation to extend the current lobbying ban to third-party lobbying firms representing Amazon’s interests—not just to Amazon employees themselves.
In addition, the EP’s legal affairs committee is planning to request that the European Commission review public contracts awarded to Amazon.
MEPs are also considering holding a hearing with Amazon representatives in a relevant parliamentary committee. A similar session in June was held without Amazon's participation. According to the memo, such a hearing would be a step toward normalising relations between lawmakers and the company.
However, two unnamed MEPs emphasised that no official decision has been made yet. Meanwhile, meetings between Amazon lobbyists and MEPs are reportedly still taking place.
Amazon spokesperson Sarah Tapp stated that the European Parliament would allow a “fact-based discussion focusing on the logistics sector as a whole and Amazon’s contribution to the European economy and society.” She also confirmed that the company still has “access to the European Parliament.”
