EU top diplomat urges Armenia to join sanctions on Russia
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called on Armenia to join the European Union’s sanctions against Russia, describing them as “painful for the EU” but essential for maintaining international order.
Speaking at a press conference following the EU–Armenia Partnership Council meeting, which Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan attended, Kallas emphasized the importance of aligning strategic positions with the EU’s common foreign policy, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
She noted that Armenia’s current alignment with EU foreign policy decisions stands at just 37%.
“The world order is changing, which makes strategic ties very important for the European Union’s partners, including Armenia. The EU is imposing sanctions against Russia. At the same time, it is engaging its partners because it wants the war between Russia and Ukraine to end," Kallas noted.
At the same time, Kallas acknowledged that the economic fallout from the conflict in Ukraine is “very significant for the EU,” highlighting the heavy costs borne by European states in implementing the sanctions.
