EU warns of funding suspension for Venice Biennale over Russian pavilion decision
The European Commission has warned it may suspend funding for the Venice Biennale following the decision to reopen the Russian pavilion.
Lithuanian outlet Delfi said the Commission is considering freezing a grant of around €2 million allocated through 2028. In a letter sent via the European Education and Culture Executive Agency, organisers were given 30 days to clarify their position, with funding at risk of suspension or withdrawal if concerns are not addressed.
The decision to allow Russia’s participation in the 2026 edition of the Biennale, set to open on May 9, has triggered criticism from multiple European Union member states and Ukraine, which view the move as inconsistent with sanctions imposed after the outbreak of the war.
According to the report, 22 EU countries have already voiced opposition to Russia’s inclusion. Kyiv has formally objected, while the issue has also sparked political debate in Italy.
Italy’s culture minister expressed dissatisfaction with the development, while Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini criticised Brussels’ stance, calling it “vulgar blackmail.”
