Euronews journeys through Baku's ancient walled city, where history lives on VIDEO

Nestled within the walls that have safeguarded it for centuries, Icherisheher (the Old City) remains the enduring historical heart of Baku, where medieval architecture, living traditions and modern urban management converge to preserve one of the Caucasus' oldest continuously inhabited settlements.

A new Euronews feature, produced in partnership with the Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Agency (AZPROMO), explores how the UNESCO World Heritage site is protecting its rich historical legacy while adapting to the demands of the 21st century.

The report highlights ongoing efforts to conserve the Old City's distinctive architectural heritage through the careful restoration of historic buildings, many of which have been sensitively adapted for contemporary use. Authorities are also focusing on sustainable urban management and community-led initiatives aimed at ensuring the district remains a vibrant residential neighbourhood rather than solely a tourist attraction.

Rather than treating the walled city as an open-air museum, preservation efforts seek to maintain its role as a living historical centre where residents, businesses and visitors continue to coexist within its centuries-old streets.

The Euronews feature concludes that Icherisheher offers an example of how historic cities can protect their cultural identity while embracing innovation, ensuring that one of the region's most significant urban heritage sites continues to thrive for generations to come.
