European Parliament to consider Armenia's EU bid
The European Parliament (EP) has voted to consider Armenia applying to join the European Union.
A total of 504 MEPs voted in favour of the resolution, four voted against and 32 abstained, Caliber.Az reports citing Armenian media.
In the draft resolution, MEPs proposed that Armenia be examined for EU candidate status.
“Should Armenia be interested in applying for candidate status and continuing on its path of sustained reforms consolidating its democracy, this could set the stage for a transformative phase in EU-Armenia relations,’’ the resolution reads.
Earlier, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan floated the idea that Armenia plans to start the EU application process by the end of 2024.
He was echoed by the country's Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan who in a television interview with Turkish channel TRT said Armenia is seeking to get closer to the West amid worsening relations with Russia.
