Floods, landslides devastate northeast India as monsoon rains hit hard
At least 36 people have died and more than 550,000 have been affected as heavy monsoon rains trigger widespread flooding and landslides across India’s northeastern states.
The worst-hit state is Assam, where relentless rainfall since May 29 has caused rivers to overflow, claiming 11 lives — including three Indian Army personnel, Caliber.Az reports per Indian media.
Fatalities and reports of missing persons have also been confirmed in Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura. The severe weather has led to the damage of over 10,000 homes, forcing thousands to flee. Schools have been shut down, and both rail and road transport have been heavily disrupted.
The supply of food and essential goods has been compromised in several remote districts. Indian Army units and Air Force helicopters have been deployed in the rescue operations. In Sikkim, more than 1,600 stranded tourists were airlifted to safety from flood-affected areas. Authorities report that tens of thousands of local residents have been relocated to emergency relief camps.
