FM: Russia, Armenia turn page on distrust
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has announced that Russia and Armenia moved beyond a phase of mutual distrust, signaling a potential reset in bilateral relations.
His remarks came during an address to faculty and students at branches of Russian universities in Yerevan, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Lavrov said the shift was underscored by his meetings earlier in the day with Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and the president of Armenia. The event was broadcast on the official website of Russia’s Foreign Ministry.
“Our talks at the foreign ministry today [May 21], as well as the meeting with the president, confirmed that we are moving beyond the stage of mutual mistrust or grievances,” Lavrov stated.
“We now realise that such distrust is meaningless. There are real facts on the ground, and that is what we must base our actions on.”
Lavrov added that Moscow and Yerevan have passed a turning point in their relationship, moving away from a time when communication lacked both openness and mutual confidence. He described this progress as the key outcome of his visit to Armenia.
