FM: Türkiye sees improved ties with Armenia as key to Yerevan-Baku talks
Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan has said that Türkiye views the improvement of its relations with Armenia as an integral part of the broader negotiation process between Yerevan and Baku.
“Both we and the Turkish side have expressed our willingness to establish diplomatic relations and open the borders. Unfortunately, Türkiye links its relationship with Armenia to the dynamics between Armenia and Azerbaijan. We must continue the dialogue,” Mirzoyan stated at a press conference, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Despite sharing a common border, Türkiye and Armenia have no diplomatic relations. In 2009, foreign ministers of both countries signed protocols in Zurich aimed at establishing diplomatic ties and outlining the principles of their future relationship. However, these protocols were not ratified by any side.
On March 1, 2018, Armenia announced the annulment of the protocols. In 2021, Türkiye and Armenia appointed special representatives to address the issue of normalisation of relations.
