France and Italy do not guarantee military aid to Ukraine in 2026
Two key European allies have stopped short of committing to provide military assistance to Ukraine next year, according to Ukrainian defence officials.
During a meeting of the Ukraine Contact Group in Brussels, France and Italy declined to make firm pledges on military support for 2026, Calibe.Az reports via foreign media.
France has previously proposed redirecting funds allocated for weapons purchases for Ukraine towards strengthening Europe’s defence industry. Meanwhile, the Italian government led by Giorgia Meloni is said to support peace initiatives backed by the United States.
Neither Paris nor Rome has announced specific aid packages or contributions to Washington’s PURL weapons programme.
Kyiv also reportedly failed to secure guarantees of future arms supplies from several other European nations, including Albania, Bulgaria, Poland, Croatia, Czech Republic, Greece, Hungary, Finland, Romania, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Montenegro and North Macedonia.
According to Ukrainian officials, the country’s principal backers currently remain the United Kingdom, Germany, as well as Nordic and Baltic nations.
