France to resume full diplomatic presence in Algeria as envoy returns
France is resuming its diplomatic presence in Algeria, with French Ambassador Stéphane Romatet set to return to Algiers after a year-long absence, according to the office of French President Emmanuel Macron.
Romatet had been recalled from Algeria in April 2025 amid a diplomatic crisis between Paris and Algiers that strained bilateral relations. His return is being presented as part of a gradual effort to restore ties between the two countries, Caliber.Az reports per French media.
According to the Élysée Palace, the ambassador will accompany French Minister Delegate for the Armed Forces Alice Rufo during a visit to Algeria on May 8. The visit will include participation in commemorative events related to the events of May 8, 1945, in Sétif, where French colonial authorities carried out a violent crackdown on pro-independence demonstrations, resulting in large numbers of casualties.
The French presidency said Macron aims to restore “effective dialogue” with Algeria as part of broader efforts to ease tensions.
At the same time, Paris continues to press for progress in the case of French journalist Christophe Gleizes, who remains in custody in Algeria and is seeking a presidential pardon.
