France trying to cast shadow on Baku Initiative Group's reputation, executive director says PHOTO
Abbas Abbasov, the executive director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), has vehemently rejected the unfounded claims made by the French Secretariat for Defense and National Security (VIGINUM).
The report, published in December 2024 by VIGINUM, casts doubt on the legitimacy of the group and its activities, leading Abbasov to issue a strong rebuttal, Caliber.Az reports, citing local media.
He emphasized that BIG operates strictly within the boundaries of international law, stating, "We support and will continue to support the struggle for the freedom of peoples suffering from neocolonialism."
Abbasov also expressed concerns over France's role in advancing neocolonial policies, directing attention to the French government's own foreign policies rather than levying accusations against an organization working for global justice.
"The French government, under President Emmanuel Macron, must focus on addressing its own neocolonial practices," Abbasov remarked. "The responsibility for the current situation rests with them, and they should cease their policies that perpetuate colonization."
Abbasov also praised the efforts of President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan, describing him as a prominent leader who has contributed significantly to the global decolonization movement. His resolve in combating neocolonialism, Abbasov noted, directly challenges the motives of those countries pursuing such policies.
"If France truly supports international law, it is contradictory for the country to continue its colonial practices," Abbasov asserted, pointing out the inconsistency in France’s stance.
The Baku Initiative Group was established on July 6, 2023, during the ministerial meeting of the Coordinating Bureau of the Non-Aligned Movement chaired by Azerbaijan. It is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to fostering international partnerships in decolonisation and human rights.
Since its inception, BIG has expanded its global cooperation, establishing partnerships with countries and regions including Corsica and the Union of Comoros. These collaborations aim to bolster international support for decolonization initiatives.
The group firmly and continuously supports the struggles for freedom and independence of those living under colonial and neocolonial rule, committing to solidarity and practical assistance. Simultaneously, the organization contributes to women empowerment, human rights, environmental, and cultural issues.
In July 2024, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev pledged support for the independence movements of France's overseas territories, including New Caledonia and Corsica. This commitment aligns with BIG's mission to assist peoples seeking independence from colonial powers.
