France under fire from Israel over minister entry ban
Israel’s ambassador to France, Joshua Zarka, has criticised the French government’s decision to bar National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir from entering the country, calling the move “ridiculous.”
Speaking in an interview with BFMTV, Zarka argued that the ban could have unintended political consequences, strengthening Ben-Gvir’s domestic standing. He also emphasised that, as a representative of the Israeli government, he is required to treat the minister with respect.
The entry ban was previously announced by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. The decision was linked to the circulation of a video that allegedly shows participants in a Gaza-bound aid flotilla with their hands bound and positioned on their knees.
Addressing broader regional issues, Zarka stated that Israel would continue its actions against Hezbollah for as long as the group poses a threat to national security. He underscored that protecting Israeli civilians remains a priority.
He added that the international community had at one point supported efforts to disarm Hezbollah, but said those diplomatic initiatives have failed to achieve tangible results.
Turning to ongoing U.S.–Iran negotiations, Zarka noted that Iran currently does not have nuclear weapons. However, he warned of the risk that Tehran could resume its nuclear program.
He also suggested that the current round of negotiations may pave the way for increased international pressure on Iran, with the goal of fully dismantling its nuclear capabilities.
