FT: Ukraine plans presidential election, peace referendum before May 15
Ukraine has begun preparations to hold a presidential election and a referendum on peace agreements with Russia before May 15, the Financial Times reports, citing sources.
The decision comes amid pressure from the United States to bring the conflict to a resolution by spring.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy may formally announce the referendum and election on February 24. His team has indicated that they are ready to organise voting as quickly as possible, despite logistical challenges.
The Ukrainian parliament is expected to consider legislative changes in March and April that would allow elections to take place under martial law.
Zelenskyy’s presidential mandate officially expired on May 20, 2024, but elections have repeatedly been postponed due to the ongoing state of emergency.
The president has repeatedly affirmed his readiness to run, stressing the need for legal adjustments and security measures so that members of the armed forces can vote.
He has called on parliament to prepare the necessary legislation and urged the United States and Europe to guarantee safe voting conditions.
