Georgia freezes bank accounts of seven NGOs over 2024 unrest
Tbilisi City Court has frozen the bank accounts of seven non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Georgia accused of funding the civil unrest that shook the country in 2024.
According to the Georgian General Prosecutor’s Office, which confirmed the move via local media, the investigation has been ongoing since February, Caliber.Az reports.
Authorities are probing allegations of sabotage, threats to national interests, and collaboration with foreign organisations engaged in hostile activities.
Investigators claim that the NGOs supplied demonstrators in Tbilisi with protective equipment, including gas masks, goggles, shields, pepper spray, and other items used against police officers during the unrest.
The accounts of the following organisations have been frozen: Civil Society Foundation, International Society for Fair Elections and Democracy, Institute for the Development of Freedom of Information, Guardians of Democracy, Georgian Democracy Initiative, Sapari, and Social Justice Centre.
