PM: "Georgia is a sovereign state, not a schoolchild to be instructed”

04 June 2026 15:00

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has said Georgia “is not a schoolchild to be instructed or corrected at will,” stressing instead that it is a sovereign and dignified state, a position he noted has been repeatedly voiced in all relevant international platforms.

He stressed that Georgia has consistently defended its national dignity even in circumstances involving particularly difficult and demanding conditions, Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.

According to Kobakhidze, statements made by the US Secretary of State carry little weight for the domestic opposition, which he described as discredited and significantly weakened, reflecting the current political landscape.

Regarding relations with the United States, he said Georgia’s approach remains centred on rebuilding the strategic partnership. He added that recent signals from Washington, including those conveyed during visits to Georgia, are viewed with optimism and suggest the possibility of restoring and further developing bilateral ties.

However, he emphasised that any progress will depend on constructive dialogue and clearly defined, fair positions from both sides.

The Prime Minister argued that any deterioration in Georgian–American relations in recent years was the responsibility of the previous US administration.

Kobakhidze further claimed that past pressure, coercion, and political blackmail had negative consequences for Georgia, and concluded that what has been damaged by injustice can only be repaired through a fair and balanced approach.
