Georgia rejects EU pressure, says relations have reached impasse
Georgia will not bow to pressure or threats from the European Union, Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili said following talks witheu the EU’s ambassador to the country.
“No one but us—the Georgian people and the government elected by the people—can understand the crossroads at which the country stands. The government knows best which path to choose and understands that we need neither social polarization nor a radical agenda. We also have no need for a dark past or threats of this kind,” Bochorishvili said after meeting EU Ambassador Paweł Herczyński, Caliber.Az reports via Georgian media.
She rejected EU concerns over governance in Georgia, saying there are no repressions in the country and that all legislation passed by parliament is aimed at ensuring stability and security.
“Relations with the European Union have reached an impasse, and there is only one reason for this—the behavior we are seeing from the Brussels bureaucracy,” she added.
The comments come after Herczyński warned that the coming weeks and months would be decisive for Georgia’s European integration prospects, saying the country faces a choice between joining the European family or returning to what he described as a past marked by instability, poverty, and corruption.
