Georgia’s Tbilisi plans new tram line, metro expansion in 2026
In Georgia, Tbilisi city authorities plan to start constructing a new tram line and expanding existing public transport services in 2026, with the most significant changes expected in the metro system.
Currently, Tbilisi’s public transport network includes buses, the metro, minibuses, and cable cars, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The largest upgrade targets the metro: the city plans to purchase 111 new metro cars in 2026, funded by the Asian Development Bank.
Additionally, design work will begin on a 7.5-kilometre tram line connecting the Didube metro station to the Didi Dighomi residential area, with 10 tram sets planned and a new tram depot to support the line.
A new cable car linking the Vazisubani neighbourhood with the Samgori metro station is also set for design in 2026.
Other planned infrastructure projects include building a road bridge connecting Dadiani Street with Railway Square. Total funding for road construction and repairs in 2026 is 132.9 million lari (about $49 million), with 563.5 million lari (about $209 million) allocated to transport development and 10 million lari (about $3.7 million) for the new bridge.
