Georgian FM urges Kaja Kallas to reconsider EU approach to Tbilisi
Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili has urged the EU to reconsider its approach toward Tbilisi, describing Brussels’ decisions as bureaucratic.
Responding to remarks by Kaja Kallas, she said the European Commission Vice-President uses the EU issue as a political instrument in relation to Georgia, Caliber.Az reports.
She argued that Brussels needs to change its attitude toward the country.
According to her, Georgia’s current authorities were elected by the people and are acting in the national interest, ensuring peace, stability, and conditions for economic development.
“What exactly Kaja Kallas does not like about this course is unclear,” the foreign minister said.
EU institutions and multiple European Parliament resolutions have sharply criticised Georgia for democratic backsliding and violations of fundamental rights, highlighting contested elections, restrictions on civil society, and controversial new laws that undermine political pluralism.
On April 16, Kaja Kallas said the European Union is exploring the possibility of imposing further measures on Georgia.
“We will consider what additional measures are necessary. The Georgian government is not moving in the right direction,” she noted.
Meanwhile, Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili claimed that any disagreement with Brussels on even a single issue leads to accusations of being pro-Russian, noting even Trump and the Georgian Dream party were labelled pro-Russian.
